Balkan Now: Croatia

Station Žilina Záriečie: S1
Duration 74:43

Following the tradition of the “Zagreb School of Animation”, there is vivid life in contemporary Croatian animation with increasing numbers of new animators searching for a great film. In the old days, almost all films, no matter how innovative, were cel animations. Croatian new animation has a much wider scope to offer – in terms of modern techniques such as 3D CGI, as well as stop-motion, oil/sand on glass, and experimental object animation, for example.

There has also been a big change at the production level which has led to more diversity. All films from the “Zagreb School” were made at the legendary Zagreb film. From the beginning of the 2000s a number of new producers emerged, which further contributed to diversity. The top name is Bonobostudio – currently the internationally most successful production and distribution company from Croatia. Kreativni sindikat is another notable production company.

At the end, we have to mention the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. The “Zagreb School” was never an educational institution where people could go and study. The university course for Animation and New Media was only established in 1998. New generations of students now have an educational institution which delivers new talents every year.
