Although the interwar inception of Hungarian animation included well-known figures such as John Halas and George Pal, on-going animated film production was reinstituted by those animators who remained in Hungary during the postwar period. Gyula Macskássy, friend and former colleague of John Halas, is considered the father of Hungarian animation. He worked as co-owner of the private “trickfilm” studio during the 1930–40s producing animated commercials; and assisting in the foundation of state-owned Pannónia Filmstúdió in the 1950s. During the highly centralised communist film production of that decade, politically unambiguous folktale adaptations and films for children were produced; while 1960 saw the beginning of a new wave of modernist, limited animation.
