Hungarian Animated Caricatures of the 1960s
The main inspiration for animation artists in the 1960s was contemporary caricatures and comic strips. These animated intellectual caricature-parables – often built on punch-lines and surprise endings – use black humour to examine everyday situations and topics pertinent to public life. The film Passion gave rise to the representation of the average citizen, the little man, who later became the protagonist of the popular cartoon series Gustavus, which targeted adult audiences. Between 1964 and 1975 more than 120 Gustavus episodes were produced, and it also became successful internationally (purchased in over 70 countries).
