An animated adaptation of the classic Japanese manga Barefoot Gen by Keiji Nakazawa. It tells the story of 10-year-old Gen, starting with the last days of the war before the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Gen and his mother survive the explosion and help the injured. Against all odds, Gen remains optimistic and finds enjoyment in life. One day he sees wheat once again growing in the wasteland of the nuclear blast, which reaffirms Gen’s desire to continue and overcome this tragedy. The story is based on the author’s own experiences.
